Collection: 2021 Morgan Dollar | U.S. Mint

The Morgan Silver Dollar is a coin that has been treasured by collectors for over a century. The coin was first introduced in 1878 and was last issued in 1921. In 2021, the United States Mint is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the final issue of the Morgan Silver Dollar by releasing new coins struck using modern minting techniques and .999 fine silver.

History of the Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan Silver Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and was first introduced in 1878. Morgan made history by choosing Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, as his model for Liberty. The coin was a hit with collectors and remained in circulation until 1904, when the Mint stopped producing it due to a change in silver bullion laws. The coin was briefly produced again in 1921, before being discontinued for good.

Designs of the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar

The United States Mint took great care to recreate the designs of the original coin for the 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and a crown representing unity, which consists of a Southern crop, cotton, and a Northern one, wheat. On her head is a ribbon bearing her name, "LIBERTY." Two inscriptions encircle her effigy, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "2021," and thirteen stars.

On the reverse, a heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath, with the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."

Unique Privy Marks

In addition to the standard 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars, the Mint will also release coins with unique privy marks.

The "D" privy mark featuring coins made by the Denver Mint facility.

The "S" privy mark featuring coins made by the San Francisco Mint facility.

The Philadelphia Mint produced three versions:

  • The "CC" privy mark will be featured on coins struck at the Philadelphia branch of the Mint to honor the beloved but no longer operating Carson City Mint.

  • The "O" privy mark will also be featured on Philadelphia-struck Morgans to honor the fabled New Orleans Mint. Both privy marked Morgans will be struck at the Philadelphia branch of the United States Mint.

  • One without a mint mark is included to recognize the historic Philadelphia Mint mark.
